CEREMONY  is an independent poetry project turned collective experiment in collaboration.

A place to connect

ABOUT CEREMONY

CEREMONY is a space to pause and a place to connect; to others, to yourself and to community. A ceremony transforms an everyday activity into a moment worth coming back to, honouring and preserving. CEREMONY is a collection of conversations, curiosities, emotions, research and creativity, archived to be of service to you, our community.

Then

CEREMONY began as an independent poetry project in 2017 and has since turned into a collective experiment in collaboration. Friends of all disciplines trusted the vision and contributed work for no reason other than to have more art exist in the world. The current project catalogue consists of two art books featuring 40 emerging and established artists (release dates coming soon) and an ever-expanding community conversation portal.

Now

The projects in CEREMONY are portals: immersive experiences that ask you to step into their worlds and be 'in' ceremony with them. They integrate stories shared or imagined in art with the realities we find around ourselves. CEREMONY aims to create what Parker Palmer calls "intimacy that does not annihilate difference." There are many ways of being 'in' ceremony with all of our projects: whether sitting for an hour reading a community conversation or book in their entirety, randomly flipping or scrolling through a project and finding the company you need in the place where you land, or sitting back, zoning out and listening to a clip or score. Our work is as present with you as you are with the work.

A central aspect of our project planning is bringing together publicly established artists and the everyday artist: those friends who scribble poems in their notes app that the world needs to see and celebrate. The purpose of this is to showcase a broader range of art, legitimizing experiences we all have as artistic, emotional beings. Art is something we should all be encouraged to make, share and, perhaps most importantly, connect through.

Later

Art-making and dialogue are ways to perceive possible alternate futures. We want to use the growth of this project to propel our work forward toward imagining futures and being accountable to those futures. There is a lifetime in every moment we experience, moments behind us, moments in front of us, and those that are happening this second. The CEREMONY space explores how these moments shape each of our stories and the life intertwined within them. We are incredibly intentional with our collection - and in having many voices present, the community is more rich, complex, and representative of the world around us.

These projects are the active archiving of voices by and for the communities that make them. They will always serve as places to pause, to connect, and will be examples of what is possible in the world of collaboration. We are growing an ever-evolving community with connection at the core of everything we do. We are a living time capsule, honouring our past, present, and future.

FOUNDED BY KT

Katie Sullivan is a dancer, writer and curator. Business school drop-out turned social service worker turned designer, she started making and sharing creative projects later in her life. She loves being deep in conversation with everyone and made the CEREMONY platform and community not only to bring people together but also to invite those who feel outside of the art community, like she did, to explore new connections, perspectives, and reflect on their own art practices and identity.
